Who are you?
I'm Lyn, or better known as SHUNAO in certain circles and I mainly work with character designing, concept arts, comics, and graphic design. I was born and raised in Northern California. I graduated UC Santa Cruz with a BA in Arts with an emphasis geared towards digital design. I work on creating game art and comics in my free time.
Aside from art, I enjoy playing video games, writing stories, and eating a lot.
How did you come up with the name SHUNAO?
During 2011, I finished playing Persona 4 and my favorite pairing in the game was Protagonist x Shirogane Naoto. The tag for the pairing name was "shunao," coming from protagonist in Japanese, pronounced shujinko, and half of Naoto's name. The name ended up sticking as I gained popularity with my works.
Recently, I created two characters that would fit with my name; Shu (主) and Nao (直), meaning "leader" and "honesty," respectively. I don't know what to do with them so...
How should I write/type SHUNAO?
Either all lowercase or all uppercase is preferred.
Where can I meet you and/or buy your merchandise in person?
Please check out my event page. My merchandise will very likely be available at all the events I go to. If not, I post about what I will be bringing on Twitter! I also would love to meet my fans as well!
What is the best way to support you?
Becoming a patron, subscribing to me on Twitch, or buying merchandise through my online store or in-person are the best options. If you have no money and would still like to support me, following my Twitter and/or Tumblr, retweeting/reblogging my artworks, and watching my streams are available to you as well.
I also have a Paypal.me link where I can accept donations.
I greatly appreciate the offer as I am only one person who handles the online store, going to conventions, commissions, and my webcomic.
What program do you use?
I mainly use Paint Tool Sai. For comics and effects, I use Manga Studio 5.
What tablet do you use/recommend?
At the moment, I use an Intuos Pen tablet from Wacom. Before I have used the Bamboo Pen. I recommend using any tablet that is cheap to begin drawing because you don't need anything expensive to draw well. All that is needed is practice.
Who are your inspirations?
My inspirations come from my friends, mainly radiostarkiller and princeyarts. As for popular inspirations, they change upon who I study. As for a general list, Himukai Yuji, Nishimura Kinu, Yoshida Akihiko, and Takehito Harada.
How did you develop your style?
My style wasn't a conscious decision, nor do I have a method for it. A lot of how I learned to draw was self-taught and messing with what I liked from artists. Your style can be drawn from your inspirations and whatever makes you feel good. Knowing the foundations of art first is really important, though.
How often do you draw?
I draw about 5-8 hours a day. This often ranges, mainly from what I am working on.
How long does it take to draw __________?
The time it takes to complete a piece is based on difficulty and how much time I want to put into rendering. Print take at least 7-8 hours. My chibi art, which are known to be on my charms, can range from 30 minutes to 4 hours. Commissions range from what is asked from me and it could take 1 hour to a couple of days.
What is your canvas size?
I always begin with a 5100 x 3300 300dpi canvas on Paint Tool Sai.
Can I use your art for __________?
I would prefer credit being given or a link back somewhere, but it's really hard to keep track of everyone who do use my works on other sites. As long as you don't sell my art or claim it as your own and it is only for personal use, I don't mind what you are using my art for. If I have given you permission to use my works commercially, please follow the rules and guidelines we have set and agreed on.
If I commissioned art from you, can you get it printed into a print/charm?
I can get digital print commissions printed on 11" x 17" cardstock paper, but I cannot get charms printed unless I offer to sell it. This is due to the fact that my charms are printed out in batch orders from a third-party. Getting charms cut and printed is costly.
3. Online Store
Where is your store based?
I don't have a store, persay, but I ship from Hercules, CA.
What is your store's return and exchange policy?
If the item you received is broken in the mail, please take a picture of the damage while it's still in the package and send it through my online shop's support page within 3-5 business days. I will do what I can, but I cannot promise I can give a a full exchange or refund. If you have received the product and ends up not to your liking, I cannot give any exchanges, returns, or refunds, sorry!
Can I ask for a refund if my order has not yet been shipped?
Yes! The only time I am unable to refund your order is if I already shipped out your order. Please look at previous question about return and exchange policy.
Do you accept orders placed outside of USA?
Yes! Shipping will be more expensive, though. If you're worried about your country's mailing process, I am willing to speak to customers personally to make the journey of my merchandise more secured.
How long will it take to receive my order?
After an email confirmation, most domestic orders take anywhere from 2-4 business weeks to arrive depending on the efficiency of your local postal service. This is based upon how many orders I may have received and the time it may take to receive your shipping email and item may take longer. International shipping delivery times may vary between 3-10 weeks.
How come I have not received my order/order confirmation yet?
In general, I'm a very busy person so I try to get items shipped out every two weeks. If your item is a pre-ordered item, then I may not have received the products. This can take 3-4 business weeks. I try to keep in touch with my customers through my Twitter and the hashtag #shunaostore.
Can you make a charm of __________?
I cannot get charms printed unless I offer to sell it. This is due to the fact that my charms are printed out in batch orders from a third-party. Getting charms cut and printed is costly. If you're willing to pay $50 for one, let me know.
Where do you stream?
What do you normally stream?
I mainly stream my process in art, but I have been trying to stream more games through Steam and PS4.
When do you stream?
I stream on Tuesdays and Wednesdays starting at 1pm PST. Some times I stream in the evenings, but it's more lax.
Top 10 favorite games?
In no order whatsoever,
Monster Hunter series
Final Fantasy Tactics
Tales of Xillia 2
Guilty Gear Xrd
Etiran Odyssey IV
